BOWMANVILLE, ONTARIO — A massive fire has broken out at the former Goodyear tire manufacturing plant in Bowmanville, sending thick plumes of black smoke into the sky and prompting a large-scale emergency response late Thursday night.
Fire crews from Clarington Emergency and Fire Services, along with neighbouring departments, rushed to the scene shortly after 9:30 p.m., after multiple calls reported heavy smoke and visible flames coming from the industrial complex on Baseline Road West.
Residents nearby were urged to stay indoors and keep windows closed as air quality deteriorated due to the smoke. Witnesses described explosions and intense heat as firefighters battled the flames from multiple directions.
Authorities confirmed that the building — once home to the iconic Goodyear tire plant, which closed more than a decade ago — was vacant at the time of the blaze. There are no reports of injuries so far, but officials have not ruled out the possibility of structural collapse.
The Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) have closed off surrounding roads to allow emergency teams to contain the fire. Power outages were also reported in nearby areas as crews worked to secure utilities.
Investigators from the Office of the Fire Marshal are expected to arrive Friday morning to determine the cause of the fire.
Local residents have shared dramatic photos and videos on social media showing flames lighting up the night sky — one user calling it “the biggest fire Bowmanville has seen in years.”
Officials continue to monitor the situation and urge the public to avoid the area.
