CROWSNEST PASS, ALBERTA – A desperate search is underway in southwestern Alberta after a 5-year-old boy went missing while hiking with his family near Island Lake Campground.
The child, identified as Darius McDougall, was with his siblings on Sunday afternoon when he disappeared in the wooded area near the popular campground. According to officials, Darius has autism, which may make it difficult for him to respond to searchers calling his name, adding urgency and complexity to the search.
Emergency crews, local volunteers, and specialized search teams worked through the night and into Monday, combing dense forest, trails, and nearby water bodies. Drones, tracking dogs, and ATVs have also been deployed to assist in the effort.
“Time is critical, and every set of eyes on the ground makes a difference,” said a spokesperson from Alberta RCMP. “We’re asking anyone in the area to remain alert and report anything that could help us bring Darius home.”
The community has rallied around the McDougall family, with dozens of residents joining the official search teams. Authorities have also reminded the public to avoid interfering with coordinated search patterns but encouraged volunteers to assist through organized channels.
Darius is described as 5 years old, with short brown hair, wearing a blue jacket and black pants at the time of his disappearance.
Police are urging anyone with information to contact Crowsnest Pass RCMP immediately.
