BRITISH COLUMBIA · September 2025 — The Mine Creek wildfire that forced the shutdown of the Coquihalla Highway earlier this week has grown dramatically, now burning on both sides of one of British Columbia’s busiest travel routes.
The blaze, located north of Hope, was first reported as a fast-moving fire that prompted immediate highway closures and evacuation alerts for nearby communities. As of today, officials say the fire has exploded in size, fueled by strong winds and dry conditions, making it one of the most dangerous wildfires of the season.
Fire Situation
According to the BC Wildfire Service, the fire has already scorched thousands of hectares, with flames visible from the highway. Drivers attempting to travel through the region earlier this week described scenes of heavy smoke and embers falling onto the roadway, creating extremely hazardous conditions.
Authorities have since confirmed that the fire has jumped containment lines and is now burning aggressively on both sides of the Coquihalla Highway, forcing a prolonged closure of the route.
Impact on Travel and Communities
The Coquihalla Highway, a critical transportation link connecting the Lower Mainland to the Interior, remains closed to all non-essential travel. Detours are adding hours to commute and shipping times, disrupting both passenger travel and commercial transport.
Nearby residents remain on evacuation alert, with some already forced to leave their homes. Emergency shelters have been set up in communities including Merritt and Hope to assist evacuees.
Firefighting Efforts
More than 150 firefighters, supported by helicopters and air tankers, are battling the blaze, but officials warn that the rugged terrain and dry forest conditions are making containment extremely difficult.
“We’re throwing everything we can at this fire, but the conditions are challenging,” said a BC Wildfire Service spokesperson. “Our priority is protecting life and keeping people safe.”
Outlook
With hot, dry weather expected to continue into the week, officials fear the Mine Creek wildfire could spread further before it is brought under control. The province has urged residents to remain vigilant, follow evacuation orders immediately, and avoid unnecessary travel in wildfire zones.
The Coquihalla Highway will remain closed until it is deemed safe, with no timeline yet for reopening.
