RICHMOND HILL, ON – September 2025 — A tragic accident shook a Richmond Hill community on Tuesday when a vehicle crashed into the First Roots Early Education Academy, leaving one toddler dead and several others seriously injured.
According to York Regional Police, an 18-month-old boy was pronounced dead at the scene. Six other children and at least one adult staff member were rushed to nearby hospitals with varying injuries, some reported to be serious but non-life-threatening.
Emergency crews responded quickly to the scene after multiple 911 calls reported a vehicle colliding with the daycare facility just before noon. Witnesses described a chaotic scene, with panicked parents rushing to the site after hearing of the crash.
“This is every parent’s worst nightmare. Our thoughts are with the family of the child who tragically lost their life, and with the others who are injured,” said a police spokesperson during a press conference.
Authorities have confirmed that the driver of the vehicle remained on scene and is cooperating with investigators. No charges have yet been laid as police continue to determine the cause of the crash, including whether it was the result of mechanical failure, driver error, or another factor.
The daycare has been temporarily closed as officials assess the damage and ensure the safety of the premises. Support services and grief counselors are being made available to families, staff, and the wider community.
Richmond Hill Mayor and local leaders have expressed condolences, promising a thorough investigation and additional safety measures to prevent such incidents in the future.
The York Regional Police have asked anyone with information or dashcam footage of the incident to come forward to assist in the ongoing investigation.
