OTTAWA – In a historic diplomatic move, Canada has officially recognized the State of Palestine, marking a major shift in the country’s foreign policy.
The announcement was made by the Prime Minister’s Office earlier today, emphasizing Canada’s commitment to supporting peace, stability, and human rights in the Middle East. Officials said the decision reflects both Canada’s longstanding support for a two-state solution and growing international consensus on the issue.
“Canada recognizes the State of Palestine and offers our partnership in building the promise of a peaceful future for both the State of Palestine and the State of Israel,” the statement read.
This recognition makes Canada one of the largest Western nations to formally acknowledge Palestinian statehood, joining more than 130 countries worldwide that already do so. The move comes amid increasing calls from international organizations and humanitarian groups urging stronger action to end decades of conflict in the region.
The federal government also confirmed that Canada will begin working with Palestinian authorities on development projects, humanitarian aid, and institution-building initiatives, while continuing its security and diplomatic ties with Israel. Officials stressed that recognition of Palestine does not change Canada’s strong support for Israel’s right to exist in peace and security.
Reactions have been swift. Palestinian representatives welcomed the decision as “a courageous step toward justice and peace,” while Israeli officials expressed disappointment, warning that recognition outside of a negotiated settlement could complicate future peace talks.
Despite the controversy, Ottawa maintains the move reflects Canadian values of fairness, diplomacy, and international cooperation. “Peace in the region cannot be achieved without acknowledging the aspirations of both peoples,” the Prime Minister said in closing remarks.
