The U.S. ambassador to Canada has stated that there is “no realistic path” to reaching a new tariff agreement between Washington and Ottawa before American Thanksgiving.
Speaking to reporters in Ottawa, the ambassador said ongoing tensions between the two countries—sparked by recent trade disputes and U.S. tariff hikes—have slowed progress on negotiations. “While both sides are committed to dialogue, there are still significant differences on key issues, including manufacturing, agricultural exports, and energy,” he noted.
The ambassador emphasized that the U.S. remains open to future discussions but ruled out any immediate resolution. “We simply don’t see any way to finalize an agreement before the holiday period,” he said.
Canadian officials have not issued a formal response but maintain that Canada will continue advocating for fair trade and mutual respect. Prime Minister Mark Carney’s office reiterated that Canada “won’t be pressured into any deal that undermines national interests.”
The impasse adds to growing uncertainty surrounding North American trade relations, as both nations navigate political and economic pressures ahead of the new year.
